Reasons to Charter a Yacht in the British Virgin Islands

Made for Sailing

Steady trade winds, line-of-sight navigation and sheltered channels between islands make the BVI one of the most forgiving and enjoyable sailing grounds in the world. Whether under sail or engine, guests can hop between islands in under an hour, spending more time at anchor and less time underway.

Legendary Island Culture

Few destinations match the BVI's reputation for laid-back island charm, with calm waters and steady conditions that make the area ideal for a luxury vacation and a smooth adventure under sail. It's a destination built as much around the social scene ashore as the sailing itself, where you can explore each island on a sailing yacht or a sailing catamaran, a popular choice for stability and space, turning every journey into a memorable experience and an effortless trip between Jost Van Dyke's iconic beach bars and Tortola's lively waterfront restaurants.

Most charters in the USVI are captained, while bareboat options suit highly experienced sailors.

A Beach for Every Mood

With calm, protected bays and some of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean, the BVI offers everything from bustling beach clubs to pristine beaches and secluded anchorages, often just a short dinghy ride apart. Time ashore becomes part of a broader island-hopping journey, where white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and hidden gems turn every stop into a luxury vacation. It’s a social scene that also creates a memorable mix of relaxation, exploration, and adventure.

What to See in the British Virgin Islands

Tortola

The largest of the BVI and the main gateway for most charters, Tortola combines excellent anchorages with a lively waterfront in Road Town, along with easy access to world-class diving and the island's own quieter beaches on the north shore.

Virgin Gorda

Considered by many to be the most beautiful island in the BVI, Virgin Gorda is home to the extraordinary granite boulders of The Baths, alongside upscale marinas, boutique shops and some of the region's finest dining and accommodation; while Tortola is a common gateway, many travellers also set sail from nearby Charlotte Amalie when starting from St. Thomas. Guests boarding a boat here can also expect yacht club-style marinas and top notch charter support. Day charters typically include ice, water, and soda. All-inclusive charters often provide food and drinks. Virgin Gorda is also known for iconic stops like Bitter End Yacht Club, and for adventurous routes that push on toward the Bitter End.

Jost Van Dyke

The BVI's spiritual home of island nightlife, Jost Van Dyke is famous for white bay's Soggy Dollar Bar and a string of beach bars that make it one of the liveliest stops on any Virgin Islands itinerary, while Virgin Gorda adds upscale appeal with Bitter End Yacht Club at Bitter End as a standout stop for luxury yachting.

For a more adventurous leg, norman island is prized for its caves, snorkelling, and pirate lore tied to treasure island, with the famous willy t adding a memorable floating bar stop nearby.

Mooring fees in the BVI are commonly around $30 to $55 per use.

Anegada

A flat coral atoll unlike anywhere else in the BVI, Anegada offers vibrant coral reefs, excellent scuba diving and snorkelling, and some of the best lobster in the Caribbean, all wrapped in a quieter, more remote atmosphere than its neighbours. Many charters include snorkelling gear and other water toys, making it easy to explore the shallows between beach stops.

When to Charter a Yacht in the British Virgin Islands

The BVI is a year-round charter destination, with coral reefs drawing guests for snorkelling and scuba diving, but high season runs from December through April, when the weather is at its most settled and trade winds are steady. Many charters also include water sports equipment and water toys tied to that reef experience, with kayaks and snorkelling gear often part of the package. May and November offer a quieter, shoulder-season alternative with fewer crowds, while June through November brings the Atlantic hurricane season, meaning itineraries in these months should be planned with some flexibility.
